Writer's rooms are still pretty astoundingly white across the board. According to a report by Color of Change, 86% of TV writers are white. Considering that approximately 0% of the cast of On My Block is white, that's not something the show could — or, rather, should — perpetuate.
It would be weird to have a cast full of characters of color without the writing team to back them up. That comes with filling a writer's room with a variety of perspectives and talent that can deliver on the show's premise. On My Block seems to have done that for its first season.
