Here Are All The Absolutely Logical Reasons Pauline Hanson Gave For Raising The Voting Age To 21

This is Pauline Hanson, leader of Australia's right wing One Nation party. On Monday she gave a five minute speech about why she thinks the legal voting age should be raised to 21.

Australia's voting age was lowered from 21 to 18 in 1973, in line with the age of conscription to fight in wars.

Labor and the Greens have in recent years reignited the enrolment debate, calling for the voting age to be lowered to include an extra 500,000 16- and 17- year-olds on the electoral roll.

But Hanson disagrees. She wants one million young Aussies struck off the roll and the legal voting age increased to 21.

And here are all the absolutely logical reasons why:

1. Young people don't have jobs and don't pay tax.

HANSON REASON: “They’ve never held a job, they’ve never paid any taxes, they have no understanding of politics — and [Sarah Hanson-Young] wants to reduce it because you think it will increase the Greens vote."

2. In the 1970s kids left school at 13 and now they stay there until 18.

HANSON REASON: "Times were totally different at that time because the youth finished school around about 13 years of age, if not younger than that. These days the kids are still school until 18 years of age, then they go straight onto university."

3. Young people just don't care about politics.

HANSON REASON: "Studies show young voters are not engaged or interested in the electoral process."

4. Kids ask their parents who they should vote for.

HANSON REASON: "How many times do we have kids that don't even know —  and I'm talking about [aged] 18-plus — they have no idea who they're going to vote for, why they should vote for them, they have no idea of policies, and they ask their parents who they should be voting for."

5. Boomers don't understand how parliament works.

HANSON REASONS: "When we're talking about people that I meet on a regular basis that have no understandings — and I'm not talking about 18- to 21-year-olds, I'm talking about people of older generations don't even understand the workings of parliament. You ask them the difference between the local, state and federal [government] and they can't even tell you."

6. Other people want the voting age lowered to 16.

HANSON REASON: "Why do the Greens and the Labor Party under Bill Shorten, because in 2015 he suggested the voted age be lowered to 16..."

Her thought ended really abruptly, I'm sorry it doesn't make more sense.

7. Politicians have treated people like mushrooms!

HANSON REASONS: "Another thing that this parliament and the political parties in this place have kept people in the dark, treated them like mushrooms when it comes to the preference system, because you don't want them to be informed of where their preferences go. So people are totally confused not only about voting but where the preferences go."

8. Luxembourg, aka that tiny place in Europe, voted against lowering the voting age.

HANSON REASON: "The lowering of the voting age from 16 to 17 was rejected by Luxembourg and that was by 81% of voters in June 2016. They didn't want it lowered to that age — 81% said no way in the world did they want to do it."

9. "Turkey and the grave sites."

HANSON : "I like the referral back to Turkey and the grave sites, and I'm not being disrespectful at all to those people because my grandfather fought at Gallipoli. And the whole fact is, voting age at that time was 21. Yes people went and fought for this country."

10. Labor and the Greens didn't want a plebiscite on same-sex marriage.

HANSON: "You have the Labor and the Greens saying, 'Everyone should have the vote', they want to lower it to 16 years of age, 'and the fact is they should have their vote'. Well who wanted to stop the plebiscite in the marriage equality? The Labor and the Greens! They didn't believe that Australians should actually be voting on this...[they say] this should be up to the parliament. So, look at the hypocrisy of it. And they say that people should have the right to vote — not it came to marriage equality bill. No way in the wide world. They wanted to stop that because they know better than the average voter out there."
