Everyone's Making Fun Of The "Bachelorette" Contestant Who Claimed He Was A Socceroo

    Soccer-who?

update: Michael has released a statement to clear up the confusion:

"I am very proud of my soccer career and all that I have achieved. I was honoured to be a part of the Australian team for the Sydney Olympics and during my time as a professional soccer player, I was lucky enough to play overseas. I commenced my career playing for the young Socceroos. Apologies for any confusion caused in regards to suggesting I played for the Socceroos. My main goal now is to find love on The Bachelorette".

Meet Michael, one of the contestants on Australia's The Bachelorette.

He's handsome, loves to shower (in his shorts?), and is apparently really really good at football.

    Just ask him.

    Except, that's not quite true.

In his introduction, 34-year-old Michael mentions playing for the Socceroos and representing Australia at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games as a highlight of his life.

Michael Turnbull represented Australia a handful of times in youth teams, not the Socceroos. He was also in the Australian squad for the 2000 Olympics, but never actually made it into the pitch.

Turnbull has played a handful of games in Australia's premier soccer competition, The A League. He played six games for the New Zealand Knights in the 06/07 season, and was last year picked up by the Melbourne Victory as an injury replacement player, but again, never made it on to the pitch.

That's not to say he's not a good footballer. Here he is playing for Queensland state team the Brisbane Strikers in 2014.

Eagle-eyed football/Bachelorette fans were quick to point out the error.

Turnbull: “my career highlight was playing for the Socceroos and in the Olympics” both of which never happened #bacheloretteau

    Turnbull socceroos........??? Bbbbrrrrr!!!!

Michael Turnbull played: - zero minutes at the 2000 Olympics - zero Socceroos games - only 540 mins in the #ALeague… ever #bacheloretteau

    I'm bit late to the party- Michael Turnbull played: 10 A games for U20, incl 1999 & 2001 World Cups 1 A game for U23 0 games for @Socceroos

And people starting making fun of him.

Good to see five-time winner of the Ballon d'Or, Michael Turnbull, strut his stuff on the Bachelorette

Think Turnbull was a bit hard done by today. I know that playing for the #Socceroos was also the highlight of my career. #TheBacheloretteAu

What are your top 3 memories from watching The #Bacheloretteau 's Michael Turnbull in action for the Socceroos?

Eventually the Socceroos themselves jumped in with a message of support. But still, he had stretched the truth just a little.

You might not have won a cap, but we back u to win hearts across Australia in @BacheloretteAU Michael #BacheloretteAU

Ah well, if only he had some other redeeming features.
