Will it be a golden year for movies? Or a golden nightmare? 2007 was a good year, both box office-wise and for the avid film-goer (Juno! No Country For Old Men! Ratatouille! There Will Be Blood!). Can 2008 come close?
Movie Buzz M. Night Shyamalan's newest movie is being mercilessly made fun of in reviews and on internet boards. Christopher Orr instant-classic tear-down review in The New Republic isn't even a review -- it's a long spoiler meant to ensure a reader won't go see the film and thereby waste time and money. The blog reaction is just as dire.
Celebrity Buzz The Jewish-French-Moroccan actress is getting ever higher-profile roles. She just appeared in Adam Sandler's You Don't Mess With The Zohan, and is currently filming Cadillac Records with Adrien Brody, Beyoncé and Mos Def. Also worth noting: Very hot.
Movie Buzz A rom-com/slasher film, set in the woods, is the world's first mumblecore horror movie. This looks suitably endearing to be unsettling, in the sense that a person with a paper bag over their head is both scary and laughable.
Movie Buzz A trailer for the new Coen Brothers' movie hits the web. It doesn't have a release date yet, but a Coen Bros. outing with George Clooney, Frances McDormand, John Malkovich, Tilda Swinton and Brad Pitt kind of sells itself. And Pitt's highlighted hair almost gives Javier Bardem's bowl-cut a run for its ugly, ugly money.
Movie Buzz Panned by the Times and New Yorker, with tepid reviews elsewhere, the movie's opening weekend will still probably be huge. No one ever compared Sex and the City to The Wire -- Dickensian it ain't -- but most people don't care, they just want to see Carrie buy expensive clothes and talk about love.
Movie Buzz A peek inside the varied world of people who love making balloons into something more. Sort of like a Wordplay for the ballon-twister set, the documentary takes you to "Twist and Shout," a balloon twisting convention, and the lives of eight twisters. It'll be playing at select theaters across the country this summer.
Movie Buzz Starring Zach Galifianakis in the strangest trailer of the year. I have no idea what this movie is really about, but it's worth noting for two reasons. 1) Zach Galifianakis. 2) It outdoes those bizarre homemade Mike Gravel ads in terms of surreality.
Movie Buzz Nick Broomfield's movie about one corner of the Iraq War finally comes to the U.S. The Haditha killings were one of the worst civilian casualty incidents of the war -- 24 men, women and children were killed by a group of Marines after a roadside bombing, though all charges against the soldiers involved were dropped after an investigation. The movie looks at what happened from several different angles.
Movie Buzz Tony Stark's Girl Friday is getting love as a superhero assistant/sex symbol. Gwyneth Paltrow may have undone the badness of Sliding Doors and Shallow Hal with her turn in Iron Man.
Movie Buzz The new, Heath Ledger-inspired version of the Joker doll has been selling out in New York. Collectors are making it hard for the kiddies to get a hold of one of these -- apparently to drive up the prices of the dolls online.
Movie Buzz Expedia has created tours inspired by the Indiana Jones movies. Destinations include India, Egypt, Italy, China, Jordan, Mexico, Nepal, Peru, and the Southwestern United States. There is no mention in the PR materials of whether travelers need supply their own young Asian boy to act as Short Round.
Movie Buzz Another day, another sumer blockbuster now shrouded in a cloud of crappiness. With reports of a bloated running time (140 minutes) and rumors that "the movie may not have turned out to be what people in the industry call 'good'," Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull looks like it may not be the summer savior Hollywood had been hoping for.
Celebrity Buzz The Aussie actress appears to be having her moment. After smaller parts in movies like Elizabeth: The Golden Age and One Good Year and a starring role in Candy, Cornish gets a big debut with Friday's Stop Loss, also starring Ryan Phillippe - oh yes, and there's that nasty rumor that she's the cause of his breakup with Reese Witherspoon and that maybe they're having a baby.
Movie Buzz The good news of a teaser trailer is offset by rumors of Ed Norton feuding with Marvel over the cut of the film. The teaser makes the film look like a very different beast than the Ang Lee version of a few years ago. But Ed Norton's reportedly none too happy with the way the final cut is headed and he and Marvel have been sparring over it.
Movie Buzz Comedian Doug Benson's stoner doc goes over big at SXSW. Benson has taken Morgan Spurlock's idea for Super Size Me, swapped McDonald's for pot, and filmed the results.
Movie Buzz A new documentary that explores the world of MMO games - and the people who play them - debuts this week at SXSW. Gamer addicts, online love, goldfarming and more! Second Skin bills itself as "an intimate look at people whose lives have become transformed by the virtual worlds in online games such as World of Warcraft, Everquest and Second Life."
Movie Buzz The highly anticipated sequel to Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle will be released April 25, 2008. Our favorite stoners are back, and this time a confusion between the word 'bong' and 'bomb' on the plane to Amsterdam lands them in Guantanamo on charges of terrorism. We're looking forward to seeing more anthropomorphic bags of pot and Neil Patrick Harris riding a unicorn.
Movie Buzz Inspiredby Be Kind, Rewind, we bring you remade classics from around the web. Besides being a standard genre on YouTube, the site Filmmaking Frenzy has sponsored a contest for the best homemade remakes.
Movie Buzz The first teaser trailer for the fourth Indy movie hits the web today. The elder Harrison Ford reprises the title role, with Shia LeBouf and Cate Blanchett thrown in for good measure.
Movie Buzz The unofficial sequel of City of God is out on Friday. Director Fernando Meirelles, who made the first movie, steps into the producer role for City of Men, but don't take that as the warning sign it usually is. City of Men was originally a huge TV series in Brazil, sort of like The Wire meets The Wonder Years, but set in São Paulo.
