Teh internetz! They iz fuhn!! From LOLcats to Twitter, from Cumul.us to Evernote, from the Mullet Strategy to Nick Denton’s balls, we bring you the pages, products and personalities of the brave new world of the web.
Tech Buzz This Palo Alto start-up thinks you'd have an easier time sorting through your inbox if all correspondence was "paid for" in a system of currency -- called "Serios" -- that attaches different levels of priority to each e-mail. But, much like the eternal "if a tree falls in the forest" question, will your mom consider her political blooper forward as urgent as a direct memo from your boss? (Answer: Uh, yeah.)
Tech Buzz A YouTube for paranormal activity. There's a YouTube out there for God, porn, and now ghosts.
Tech Buzz A fake Twitter competitor dreamed up as a hoax to rile the Twitter-esque Plurk. Posts purporting the company had actually purchased Plurk eventually caused the real founders to speak up.
Celebrity Buzz Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt, the notorious couple from The Hills, have announced the launch of their own social networking website Speidiweb. Watch out, Mark Zuckerberg! Heidi and Spencer claim their site does everything Facebook and Myspace does, and more. The site's been down for the past few hours (hax0rs??) so we can't verify if this claim is actually true or not.
Tech Buzz CollegeHumor was all set to take on Facebook staffers in a beer pong tournament until the social networking site pulled out at the last minute, blaming the forfeit on "legal and PR reasons." Some might be surprised to learn that web developers would so enthusiastically partake in actual real life competition, but then again, you haven't lived until you've seen Steve Jobs in a cage match.
Imagine if your life worked just like it does on the mammoth social network. Scary, right?
Tech Buzz Initially having found success as a video blogger - his wine show attracts 80,000 viewers daily - the "social media sommelier" is out to conquer the world with TV appearances, a Hollywood agent, and a book already in sixth place on Amazon's Cooking, Food & Wine section. In keeping his fans constantly abreast via e-mail, Facebook, Twitter, and countless other social networks, Vaynerchuk has developed as ubiquitous a presence online as Jamie Lee Curtis has in those commercials for the yogurt that makes you poop.
Tech Buzz The mother and businesswoman from Missouri was indicted today by a federal grand jury in California for creating a fake profile on MySpace specifically to bully 13-year-old Megan Meier, who killed herself as a result. She could face up to 20 years in prison, where we assume that - at best - she'll only have access to dial-up. Now that's what we call karma.
Business Buzz An attempt to gauge what people really think about brands via the power of tagging. Users are presented with a wide variety of brand logos -- from ABC and Absolut to YouTube and Zune -- and asked to tag them with the first word that pops into their heads. You can then see the user-generated tag cloud and see what other people think about the same brands.
Celebrity Buzz Jessica takes part in an online staring contest in order to promote Cash Warren's new social networking site. This makes me feel dirty, either because this is the second Jessica Alba thing I've posted within 24 hours, or because I can't help comparing Jessica Alba to Magibon with bigger boobs.
Tech Buzz For ten bucks (shipping included), this site will send you something, although you won't know what. Past gifts have included duct tape wallets, flying alarm clocks, and belly dance costumes. In a world where birthdays can often result in getting homemade soap and gift certificates to chain restaurants, why not reach into this virtual grab bag of awesomeness? (Thanks to Hurty Elbow for the tip!)
Tech Buzz After a series of recent career stumbles, Amanda Congdon, the former Rocketboom hostess is back with an interactive variety show. See what happens when you get too big for your britches? You come crawling back to the stinkin' Internet. It's not so bad around here after all, is it, Congdon?
Tech Buzz A graduate student named James Karl Buck helps free himself from an Egyptian jail with a one-word blog post from his cell phone. The post was broadcast using the micro-blogging platform Twitter. He is currently trying to save his translator Mohammed Maree, who is still being held. Apparently Twitter has other uses besides broadcasting pithy thoughts and mundane activity lists to your friends. It just goes to show that if it weren't for web 2.0, we'd probably all be jobless, in jail, or dead.
Tech Buzz As "lifecaster" iJustine, this designer from Pittsburgh is a certified ce-web-rity. You may also know her from last year's 300 page iPhone video. So...how long until she gets a book/movie/record deal? Start counting.
Tech Buzz The first official convention celebrating Internet memes will take place at Harvard University, where hundreds of web nerds will actually hear each other LOL. Buzzfeed won't be in attendance, but we can only hope there's a party DJ on hand to awkwardly beckon Tron Guy to the dance floor.
Culture Buzz The wife of a major Broadway theater operator airs their sordid marriage secrets on YouTube in order to gain leverage in a divorce. Watch the YouTube divorce video. Tricia's crazy eyes and theatrical over-acting seems to discredit her case more than help it.
Tech Buzz A connected array of services - a web site, desktop client, phone interface - that let's you collect bookmarks online and also in the real world. Evernote's stated goal is to be a backup for your brain. Add notes, bookmarks, web clips and images to it's index - it can even search the text in photos you send in. Now if only the web could supply us with a backup liver, we'd be set.
Tech Buzz The much-anticipated video feature of Flickr launches, with a 90-second time limit and a super-streamlined video player. Watch Michael Arrington's Flickr Video example. Let the YouTube vs Flickr (with the occasional mention of Vimeo) war begin.
