People Are Laughing At This Mom Who Thought A Purse At A Cafe Was A Dog

Turns out there are a lot of things out there that look like dogs.

This is Hannah Murphy, a comedian and writer who lives in California. Recently, Murphy flew to New York to see her family in Yonkers.

In New York, Hannah hung out with her mom, Jenny. Here they are at the Canadian border in 2015 after they were stopped for trying to transport too much wine.

This past weekend, Hannah and her mom went for a bike ride in Yonkers and stopped at a restaurant on the way home. They sat down, ordered wine, and then Hannah went to the bathroom. When she came back, she saw her mom, who was clutching a glass of sauvignon blanc, totally smitten with a "dog." Only problem was that the "dog" (or dachshund, as Jenny insisted) was actually a purse.

my mother was giggling at this and told me to "take a look at that adorable dachshund, he's sleeping", she was look… https://t.co/lmhpm4qOFc

"She kept pointing to it and I couldn't see it (because it was a purse), and I had to get up next to her and try to get her vantage point," Hannah told BuzzFeed News.

"She was getting so mad at me, like, 'It's right there! Right in front of your face!'"

    Here's a closer look at the, uh..."dog."

    So how it's, uh...well...

    It's not a dog.

Hannah tweeted about the whole thing on Sunday and it quickly went viral. So far, the tweet has over 20,000 retweets and has inspired countless others who have been in a similar situation to Hannah's mom. Turns out there are a lot of things out there that look like dogs.

@dumb_hannah I just had the exact same experience at an airport bar in Houston the other day lol

@dumb_hannah Bah this happened to me a few dyas ago also 🤦🏽‍♂️

@dumb_hannah I did this once, smiling hard at a giant bag of yard waste because I thought it was a sweet slumpy old Golden Retriever.

"Well, I was thinking there was such a cute miniature dachshund at the next table and I pointed it out to Hannah (and my husband also with us)," Jenny told BuzzFeed News.

Jenny said the responses to Hannah's tweet have been "hilarious" and that she was choosing to "own the ditzy mom thing."

"At some point you gotta hang up your 'cool' and be who you are," she said.
